Most training is a good day out. People enjoy it, the photographs are lovely, and by the middle of the next week nothing has changed. I build the day around work the room already has to do, so what they practise is the thing they go back to.

Built around something the team already has to fix, so the exercises are real games people enjoy and are also doing a job. Tested exercises, a debrief that does the work, and a closing round that leaves something written behind.

A conversation before anything is designed
What is coming
Who is in the room, what they are walking into, what has to be different afterwards, and what must not be said out loud on the day.
Two blocks and a debrief each
The exercise is the easy part. The debrief is where the work happens, and it is the part most facilitators rush.
Something written left behind
A closing round in the team’s own words, handed to you. On one government IT programme that same twenty minutes also produced the lessons record the project close-out needed anyway.
Where this comes from
A bank of exercises that have been run in real rooms
Every exercise I use is written up with its set-up, timing, equipment and debrief questions, and has been run with a real group. That bank is The Facilitator’s Book of Gimmicks, now in its first edition at thirty gimmicks. The training-room claims that get repeated without a source are checked in It’s True, I Looked It Up.
